- Ensure safe transportation.
If you decide to use a school bus, be sure to identify a safe parking spot near the school. Also determine where parents can safely see their children off and wait for them. And, although hopefully it won’t be necessary, make sure there are two cars with chaperones on hand in case of an emergency.
- Notify the parents in a timely manner.
Let the parents know the date well in advance. Be sure to provide the following information at least one week before the field trip:
- start and end times
- contact person
- appropriate clothing
- what students should or should not bring. This includes whether the children need to bring their own lunch and how much candy or money, etc., they are allowed to bring.
- Are school trip chaperones needed?
If necessary, parents can sign up as chaperones. Before you start recruiting parents, consider the following:
- how you recruit parents (on a first-come, first-served basis, by lottery, or by specifically reaching out to parents);
- the criteria you use to recruit parents (holding a first aid certificate, parents who help out often, parents whose children would benefit most);
- How many parents are needed for the school trip?
Ensure that the support team, consisting of teachers and, if necessary, parents:
- We were informed in advance about the rules and guidelines (including those of the park);
- Understands their responsibilities (including during lunch) and is aware of the care and attention the children need during the school trip;
- Write down the names of the students in their group;
- Know which children need special attention;
- Whether there are any children with allergies;
- Have a map of the park;
- Know where the central meeting point is;
- Know where the first-aid station is located and what its phone number is.

- Discuss the rules
Discuss the rules that apply during the school trip—both on the bus and at the destination—well in advance and repeatedly with the children in class. Keep the following points in mind:

- listen to your chaperone;
- never go with a stranger;
- follow the agreed-upon rules;
- do not leave the park;
- put trash in the trash can.
